YamchaIf you’re well aware of Dragon Ball’s popularity, then you’re in for a special treat. Because they have just announced a spin-off series for the original Dragon Ball Z. The spinoff is called Dragon Ball Gaiden: Tensei-shitara Yamcha Datta Ken. Translated that means, “A Dragon Ball Side Story: Being Reincarnated as Yamcha.” No this is not a joke. This is an actual manga about Yamcha not being the crappiest fighter in Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball has been a popular shounen manga and anime for quite some time. When Akira Toriyama created the series, I don’t think he expected the main character of Goku to still continue his battles up to our present year of 2017. Dragon Ball pretty much set the bar for shounen-style manga. And it was also the butt of jokes when it came to “powering up” the characters or them changing to different forms to fight their adversaries. So it’s no wonder that the series is still alive and floating even today.

Yamcha Reborn!

The story is basically about a young Japanese teen who is suddenly reincarnated as Yamcha from Dragon Ball Z. The story takes a different twist though since the Japanese teen knows all about Dragon Ball and its storyline. After his realization of this situation, he vows to become the strongest fighter in the series instead of Goku which makes for an interesting take on the story.

It’s a sad fact that Yamcha is looked down upon and made fun of consistently by anyone who’s been a fan of the series since the start. The interesting thing is that pre-Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha was one of Goku’s rivals who becomes his ally. It’s sadder that Yamcha just becomes a joke of a character, even up to the current series of Dragon Ball Super where the characters even make fun of him consistently dying. Poor Yamcha.

If you’re interested in reading this, you can check out Shonen Jump’s Webpage here. It’s all in Japanese, so make sure you know how to read your kanji, hiragana, and katakana. Or you can be like the rest of us and just wait for it to come out in America. With the popularity of manga and anime growing, the series should be out here within a few months. There are only 3 volumes planned for release. So make sure you get it all!
